Williams, AZ, May 2, 2022 – For Immediate Release. The Kaibab National Forest, in cooperation with the communities of Parks and Sherwood Forest Estates is pleased to announce the reopening of Moonset Pit on May 7, 2022 for residents to dispose of green waste materials from private property.

The pit will be open every other Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.:
Saturday-May 7, Saturday-May 21, Saturday-June 4, Saturday-June 18, Saturday-July 2, Saturday-July 16 and Saturday-July 30, 2022.

Users will only be allowed to access and discard natural woody debris such as logs, limbs, branches, brush, needles, and leaves on these dates while staff is present. No bagged substances, lumber, construction material, household garbage or any other items should be deposited at the site.

Moonset Pit is located just west of the Parks community on a dirt road east of Spitz Springs on the north side of old Route 66.

The Kaibab National Forest would like to thank Coconino County for providing the facility at the Moonset Pit, and for helping manage the vegetation, pine needles, branches, and other waste there. Also, thank you to all of the volunteers who have helped manage this vegetation waste disposal site over the last 15+ years. Specifically, thank you to Kathie Krushinsky, Sue Hamilton, and Joanie Raetzel for all of their volunteer contributions. Their work makes it possible for us to continue providing this free opportunity to our community.

The Moonset Pit serves the local area providing a location for the disposal of natural forest debris. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this facility to make their private property more defensible against the threat of wildland fire.

Road Construction on I-40

May 1, 2022 By admin

I-40 Closed at A-1 Mountain Road for 40 days

Drivers will need to use detour and plan for extra travel time.

April 22, 2022 FLAGSTAFF – The Arizona Department of Transportation will demolish and replace
the A-1 Mountain Road overpass along I-40 in Flagstaff in 40 days thanks to an
innovative bridge construction method.
Crews will use an accelerated bridge construction method known as a
geosynthetic reinforced soil-integrated bridge system. That means crews will
create bridge abutments by putting in alternating layers of granular fill reinforced
with synthetic material. In order to replace the bridge, A-1 Mountain Road will be closed to all traffic over I-40 starting Monday, May 2.

I-40 A-1 Mountain map

During the 40-day closure, drivers will need to use the established detour route. Eastbound I-40 drivers wanting to exit A-1 Mountain Road will be detoured to Exit 191 to turn around and travel west to access A-1 Mountain Road. Drivers on A-1 Mountain Road who want to travel eastbound on I-40 will first travel westbound on I-40  and exit Hughes Avenue (Exit 185) to turn around and travel eastbound.

I-40 will also close overnight at the location of the bridge 16 times in each direction between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. during the 40-day closure so crews can demolish the current bridge and construct the framework for the new bridge. Traffic will use the off- and on-ramps to detour around the closure.

Utilizing this method benefits drivers with a serious savings in construction time, allowing the project to be completed sooner than traditional methods. In addition, a new bridge deck will be constructed using a polyester polymer concrete that can be placed and cured in a matter of days rather than weeks.

The closure is expected to be lifted by Friday, June 10.

ADOT first employed this innovative technique a few years ago when the agency replaced the Meteor City Road bridge over I-40 east of Flagstaff.

The $4.9 million project, located about 5 miles west of the I-17 junction along I-40, is anticipated to be completed by this fall.

For more information on the project, visit azdot.gov/i40-A1-Mountain.

Fire Season 2022

April 30, 2022 By webdev

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Beginning May 5, Stage 1 fire and smoking restrictions go into effect on the Williams and Tusayan Districts of the Kaibab National Forest and the entirety of the Coconino National Forest.

The city of Flagstaff and Williams will enter Stage 1 fire restrictions at that time as well.

Under Forest Service Stage 1 restrictions, fires, campfires, charcoal, coal and wood stoves are prohibited, except within a developed recreation site. Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or a developed recreation site. Fireworks are always prohibited on all national forest and state lands.

Using a device that is solely fueled by pressurized liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed in areas that are barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet of the device.

Fire restrictions are implemented to help prevent human-caused fires and to limit the exposure of visitors during periods of potentially dangerous fire conditions. Decisions about fire restrictions are based on a combination of carefully measured factors. Criteria used to determine when to implement restrictions include current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, fire activity levels, enduring drought and available firefighting resources.

Additional restrictions could be forthcoming if conditions warrant. Fire restrictions typically remain in effect until the area receives significant, widespread precipitation.

Violations could result in mandatory appearance in a federal court, fines or jail time.

The public is reminded to always be extra cautious when recreating on public lands, regardless of restrictions.

More information on all Arizona state and federal fire restrictions, including an interactive map, is available by visiting wildlandfire.az.gov/fire-restrictions.
