Pile burning planned near Parks and Dogtown Lake
January 31, 2019 5:45 p.m.
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Fuels reduction efforts on the Williams Ranger District of Kaibab National Forest will begin Feb.1 and continue into next week as weather conditions permit.
Machine piles on two separate timber sale units on the district have been evaluated and are suitable for ignition at this time.
Three hundred and eighty-three acres of piles in the Wright Timber Sale area located north of Parks on the south side of Government Hill will be ignited Feb. 1, an additional 200 acres will be burned Feb. 4 on the Shiner Timber Sale project located just southwest of Dogtown Lake along Forest Road 140.
Fuels specialists will continue to assess conditions in the weeks ahead and plan to continue implementing prescribed fire activities as opportunities arise.
Crews will use tactics to minimize smoke production and reduce the potential for impacts to the surrounding roadways and adjacent communities.
During ignition operations, smoke will be visible from areas surrounding these units but is expected to be light in volume and short in duration.
These pile burns are just a couple of many ongoing forest restoration projects happening that are critical to improving forest health and increasing vital protection of forest resources and community values.
As with all prescribed burns, weather conditions will determine the day’s most suitable for ignitions that have the least amount of negative effects on air quality and the best possible ventilation.
The public can view approved prescribed fires for any given day on the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality’s website at smoke.azdeq.gov/.
Information provided by Kaibab National Forest and your Sherwood Forest Estates Fire District
Sherwood Forest Fire District Board
The Sherwood Forest Fire District is a government agency supported by property taxes. It is governed by a three-person fire board who are publicly elected to their positions. Board members must be full time residents of the fire district to serve and are elected to four year terms. The governance by the fire board and its duties and authorities are provided by Arizona statute. The members meet and vote to fill the three positions – Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. All meetings are subject to compliance with the Arizona open meetings laws.
The primary function of the fire board is to govern the operations of the fire department by providing guidance to and oversight of the Chief, his/her command staff, and the requests, plans, and activities of the fire department. The board sets the budget, approves the department’s goals and objectives, and ensures the chief complies with the directives as provided by the board. The board’s mandate is to ensure the residents of the fire district are provided the highest level of fire, rescue, and EMS services possible, properly maintained equipment, a ready and trained volunteer force, and continuing efforts to incorporate evolving operational trends and service methodologies, while doing so within the ability of the funds available.
The public is welcome to attend the monthly board meetings. These meetings provide the opportunity to see the board as it conducts business and witness the reports by the fire chief and staff and the direction given by the board. A monthly review of the budget and finances plus a review of the month’s operations, training, and support activities is presented. A public comment period is offered for those residents of the district who may desire to address the fire board and fire management with a comment or concern.
Bruce Speirs currently serves as the fire board chair. The duties of this position are generally to formulate the agendas and direct the public meetings.
Bruce has 30 years of experience in public safety with significant experience with fire organizations in the area of helicopter support during fire operations. Bruce, with over 5,000 helicopter flight hours, was the chief pilot in charge of a multimillion dollar operation with several turbine helicopters. He received specialized LAFD pilot training for water dropping operations with the Bell 205A1 Huey helicopter, has conducted external load operations at fires, and provided aerial command and control flights during major incidents and disasters such as the Northridge earthquake, LA riots, and Malibu fires. Bruce has attended the USC School of Systems and Safety, the California Specialized Training Institute, and holds a management certificate from the California POST commission. Now retired Bruce also serves on the Mountain Rose Ranch Estates HOA board of directors.
Sue Hamilton serves as Treasurer for the Sherwood Forest Fire District Board. She lives here full time and is very active with the fire auxiliary, neighborhood watch, Moonset pit volunteers and neighborhood clean up. Sue grew up in Flagstaff and chose this area when she and her husband retired. They wanted to return to the mountains. They love it here and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible.
Debby Hambi serves as Secretary for the fire board. She lives full-time in Mountain Rose Ranch Estates and has served in this position for many years.
Christmas Trees on the Kaibab
Kaibab National Forest to offer Christmas tree tags starting Nov. 16
Williams, Ariz., Oct. 3, 2018—For Immediate Release. The Kaibab National Forest will sell over-the-counter and through-the-mail Christmas tree tags for each of its three ranger districts beginning Nov. 16 in order to allow members of the public to enjoy the popular holiday tradition of cutting one’s own tree. With 1,800 tags available, there should be sufficient supply to meet demand for this sought-after public service.
The $15 permit will allow the holder to cut a tree of any species that is not more than 10 feet in height within a designated area on the Kaibab National Forest from Nov. 16 through Dec. 24. The tag is good for a tree on the ranger district from which it was purchased and can’t be used to cut a tree on a different district unless specifically noted. No refunds will be made, even if weather conditions prevent access to cutting areas.
Individuals who purchase tags will be provided with a map showing their designated cutting area along with additional tree cutting instructions.
Individuals desiring to purchase Christmas tree tags through the mail should contact the appropriate ranger district office for information on the required process. Turnaround time for arrival of tags through the mail is often 10 business days, so individuals desiring these tags should call well in advance to ensure adequate time for their permits to arrive.
The Kaibab National Forest is also pleased to announce that all fourth graders are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit through the Every Kid in a Park initiative. Every Kid in a Park is a nationwide call to action to connect kids to nature. All fourth graders are eligible to receive a fourth grade pass that allows free access to federal lands and waters across the country for a full year. In support of this initiative, the Kaibab National Forest is making available a free Christmas tree permit to every interested fourth grader with a fourth grade pass or paper voucher. For additional information about the initiative and how to obtain a pass, visit www.everykidinapark.gov. To be eligible for a free Christmas tree permit from the Kaibab National Forest, all fourth graders must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and present their fourth grade pass or paper voucher.

Important Local Election
This November there will be two seats up for election on the Sherwood Forest Estates Fire District Board. Below are short bios of the three candidates running for these seats. We encourage all neighbors registered to vote in the Sherwood Fire District to read these statements from the candidates and vote on election day or by early ballot.
Shari Diefenderfer
I am married and my husband and I have 5 children and 13 grandchildren between the 2 of us.
I have worked in the aerospace industry, medical industry, as an IT technician and as an administration assistant. I am currently not working because my husband is retired and we travel throughout the year.
My father-in-law helped to build the 1st building for the fire department, helped to start it and was a volunteer until his health made it impossible for him to continue.
My mother-in-law helped to start the auxiliary so they could raise money to fund the department.
I would like the opportunity to continue my family’s legacy and serve my community the way my they did.
My vision for the fire department is to ensure that the department’s need’s are met according policies, and procedures.
Bruce Speirs
I am a property owner in both Sherwood Forest Estates and Mountain Rose Ranch Estates and live full time in the Sherwood Forest Fire District. I am offering my 35 years of public safety and emergency management experience to serve on our Fire Board. I fully embrace the concept that we are ‘one community.’ We must continue our efforts of coordination and collaboration – all focused on making our Fire District the best we can, and responsive to our expanding communities’ needs. Our Fire District is at a critical point in its planning efforts and will soon be making long lasting decisions such as enhancing its Emergency Medical Services, updating its facility, and upgrading its fire suppression capabilities.
Our dedicated Fire Chief, volunteer firefighters and EMTs, as well as our many support volunteers, work tirelessly toward the goal of protecting our homes and properties from fire, and providing our families and neighbors with emergency medical care when needed. With extensive experience and certificates in all areas of emergency management, from administration and budgeting to policy development and operations, I believe I can provide valuable insight as a member of the Fire Board. I also have direct experience having volunteered on many other Boards. Our fire station is also the hub of our community. It provides a friendly location for important meetings, fund-raisers, and social get-togethers and should continue to provide that function. I am ready and willing to serve on the Sherwood Forest Fire Board and I ask for your vote.
Susan Hamilton
My name is Susan Hamilton and as a member of the Sherwood Forest Estates Fire Department Board for the last 6 years I have had the opportunity to serve as your treasurer. I worked to keep your property taxes at the 2.88% interest rate that we have been luckily maintaining for several years. I also work with the budget committee to ensure that every dollar that you give the fire department is used to benefit our community.
I am a year-round resident as I am here to attend all board and budget meetings as well as special meetings. I am a member of the fire department auxiliary, have helped with community clean-up, worked closely with the Sherwood Forest POA on all their activities, I am one of the captains of our neighborhood watch program, helped with the Firewise program and have also taken on coordinating the volunteers for the green waste disposal pit that helps our community as well as our neighbors.
I’m asking for your vote for me to continue to serve you and our mountain community.
This is Susan Hamilton and I approve this message.
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Williams Ranger District Continuing Ignitions on Sunflower Fire Project
Will Impact Sherwood Forest Estates and Mountain Rose Ranch
from Williams – Grand Canyon News, September 28, 2018 4:43 p.m.
Kaibab National Forest continues a prescribed burn south of Williams through the weekend.
Fire managers on the south zone of the Kaibab National Forest will continue ignitions on the Sunflower Prescribed Fire Project through the weekend ahead as forest conditions remain favorable. Over the past three days, 3,731 acres have been treated with an additional 2,100 acre unit scheduled to be ignited Sept. 29, and a 1000 acre block on Sept. 30.
Smoke will be visible and impacts may occur in the communities of Parks, Sherwood Forest Estates, Mountain Rose Ranch Estates, Garland Prairie, Bellemont and outlying areas throughout Verde Valle. Smoke production should noticeably decrease by Sunday as operations cease on the Sunflower project.
During the remaining firing operations this week campers and hunters are asked to avoid establishing campsites near the fire activity and seek alternative sites away from the burn area.
Outflowing moisture remnants from Hurricane Rosa are expected to arrive into the local area early next week which will likely curtail prescribed fire activities for several days. Crews may move into burning slash piles in the interim as forest conditions become wetter.
Officials understand that smoke impacts to air quality may be unpleasant at times, however they can significantly reduce the amount and limit the duration more effectively using prescribed methods as opposed to an uncontrolled wildfire situation with long term effects.
During operations, fire personnel and vehicles working in these vicinities will be visible to the public. Motorists are reminded to slow down and drive with heightened caution when passing through active project areas.
All prescribed burning on the Kaibab National Forest is subject to approval by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. For additional information on the Smoke Management Division of the ADEQ and to view prescribed burns authorizations, please visit www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/smoke/index.html.
